Nutritional Spotlight: Heart Healthy Foods to Prevent and Possibly Cure Diseases
One of the more amazing statistics most people read, the one that often causes them to go (or stay) vegan, is that doctors have found that by altering diet and making very moderate lifestyle changes, very ill patients can see 100% reversals of illnesses that were once thought to be permanent.
Rather than just saying we have "the fat gene," or will probably get heart disease because every relative ahead of us in line got it, we can actually take charge and reverse course. It's incredibly empowering to know that it doesn't have to be the way we expected. You decide.
This page on preventing heart disease and other degenerative illnesses is one of my favorites, mostly because you can read real stories of people who changed their lives by simply picking other foods than those they ate when they were making themselves sick.
If you have an inspiring story to share, I would absolutely love for you to tell all our readers about what you overcame by changing your diet. As we honor the metaphorical heart this week, let's honor the biological one even more by eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
Vegan Travel: Vegan Chocolate Shop: Lagusta's Luscious
New vegans and veg-curious rejoice: you don't have to give up chocolate to live an animal-free lifestyle.
There are loads of amazing vegan chocolatiers popping up every year, and there are even plenty of places that don't advertise their chocolate as vegan that use the right ingredients.
Here are some general rules to remember:
Over the years of being vegan, I've tried many different brands of vegan chocolate that I've really loved, but I've only been to one true vegan chocolate shop. It's a little place in New Paltz, New York, about an hour from New York City, and it's cute and fun and their chocolate is delicious. If you live anywhere near by, you need to stop by. If not, the good news is that they deliver.
I wrote all about Lagusta's Luscious, so come check it out and be enticed. I know it's only a few days before Valentine's Day, but they do deliver, so if you haven't gotten a gift for your favorite person yet, I recommend their chocolate.

"Does a vegan diet promote male pattern baldness?"
"I want to become a vegan but the only thing stopping me is my male pattern hair loss. I still have a full head of hair and to battle my hair loss I take Propecia medication, have a high protein diet, and use a special shampoo. I have read on many websites that eating foods rich in protein like eggs, yogurt, and meat are needed to maintain my hair. Will becoming vegan and giving up those foods make my hair loss worse?"

From what I know about male pattern hair loss, it seems to be a largely genetic occurrence, so it’s hard for me to say that going vegan would have an effect on your hair loss.
However, I can tell you with 100% certainty that you can absolutely get just as much protein from vegan foods as from eggs, yogurt, and meat. So, if you plan to stick to eating high-protein foods and taking medication, I think you’ll have no problem going vegan. Also, from the brief research I’ve done on male pattern hair loss, I’ve read that calcium, iron, and silica are incredibly helpful for preventing hair loss. Read the rest of my response about baldness here.

Recipe of the Month: Vegan French Toast with Vegg Egg Yolk
I love the idea of some romantic heart-shaped vegan French toast to kick off your Valentine's day in style, so this is a perfect recipe for this month's newsletter.

Vegan Product of the Month: Animal-Friendly Wines
Are you sensing a theme here? We talked about heart healthy foods, chocolate, and now we're on to the wine. It's all about those romantic foods and drinks this month.
You might never have given this a second thought, but there are actually a few rules to finding a vegan wine. Most wines use filtering agents to clarify and refine their wines, and most of the time those filtering agents are some derivative of animals. So, while the drink itself may just contain fermented grapes, the process by which is gets there is often not vegan.

Pick Your Favorite Way to Follow Vegan Nutritionista
Vegan Nutritionista is constantly growing and changing, and if you signed up for this newsletter a long time ago, you might not have read our new information. Our blog page keeps you up-to-date with new articles on the site.
We're in the process of updating the design of our website. I sometimes had a hard time fitting everything I wanted to say into the two columns we used to use, so now we have three columns. And, we'll be transitioning over to a really pretty color scheme. Nothing changes for you; all the content is exactly the same. I hope you like it!

If you're a vegan nutritionista yourself and have always thought about running a blog with your vegan recipes, you should think about an SBI website.
