I'm Vegan To Prevent Needless Slaughter and Torture

by Kelly Madsen
(Illinois)

I started flirting with being a vegan when I read the book Skinny Bitch. I love all living creatures and it just brings me to tears to think about the way they are treated to feed people. It also makes me sick to think that what's on the dinner table used to have eyes and breathe.

I became firmly committed after reading Alicia Silverstone's book The Kind Diet. I know that being a vegan and the matriarch of a meat/dairy eating family isn't going to be easy. I also know that I am going to have to work to find a lot of the organic grains and produce that I need to eat, but it is definitely worth the effort knowing that I am not personally contributing to the needless slaughter and torture of another living creature.
