The Framingham Study

The Framingham Study started in 1948 with 5000 residents of Framingham, Massachusetts, which is right outside of Boston. It was funded by the National Heart Institute, which was created right after WWII, and they were looking to find out why plaque developed in arteries.

The study is still going on today, and has helped dramatically in our awareness of the risk factors for heart disease.

One thing the study uncovered was that smoking cigarettes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, and physical activity are all risk factors in the development of heart disease. Back in 1961, they found a strong correlation between high blood cholesterol and heart disease.
