Many health-conscious people enjoy taking a daily multivitamin to ensure they are getting all their nutritional needs. While I believe that the best nutrients come from nature and are best in their whole form rather than as supplements, it likely can't hurt to add some extra vitamins.
So, what vitamins do you need as a vegan?
The only vitamin that vegans just can't get from plant products alone is vitamin B12. It comes from bacteria in the ground that grows in dirt and flourishes in the bellies of animals. Meat-eating humans get plenty of B12 from eating animals who have B12 growing in their stomachs.
How much vegan vitamin B12 do you need?
You could take a B12 supplement that provides 10 micrograms daily
OR
Take a weekly 2000 microgram supplement
That's all you need! Additionally, many foods are fortified with vitamin B12, so you can take care of your needs if you eat those a few times a day.
I am a big proponent of vegans taking additional omega-3 fatty acids. Most people (meatears too) have an imbalance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, which creates havoc in the body. This imbalance is created by people eating too much processed food and fatty meats, and can happen in vegans by just not getting enough of the fatty acids.
I generally eat my omega-3s in the form of ground flax seeds, but you could also opt for flax oil, or flax pills. There are specific vitamins made just for omega-3s, and they're worth looking into, but if you take a multivitamin, you are likely covered.
