We went vegan after a friend died

Several years ago, my husband and I had a good friend of ours die of a heart attack at age 49. (At the time my husband was 51 and I was 47.) We were stunned! This friend was the epitome of physical fitness. He was a cyclist and rode 200+ miles per week on his bike. He ate healthy, at least he and we thought. He's the friend that called soda "liquid death" and never touched the stuff.


My husband realized that supposedly "eating healthy" according to society's definition and exercise was not enough. My husband was concerned because his father had passed away in his early 60s from a stroke, and my husband had high cholesterol. He began researching alternatives and found Dr. Mcdougall l and his books. He bought me my first vegan recipe book.

I was hesitant at first; I didn't want to have to learn how to cook all over again. My husband had been wanting for years to be vegetarian, but I resisted, for the same reason. But I didn't want him to pass away as young as his father had. So I agreed to cook vegan three nights per week. With some trial and error we found several recipes we really liked. We went from three nights to five nights a week, and finally I decided we didn't need to eat meat any more. We really don't miss it.

That was about five years ago. We have never felt better! My husband's cholesterol went from 235 or so to under 180. He's also lost about 40 pounds. I have been able to maintain my weight through menopause, and have avoided many of the symptoms menopause brings. We have great energy and are NEVER sick! Even my husband's hay fever has disappeared. Neither of us can remember the last time we stayed home from work and laid on the couch from an illness. It hasn't been in the last 5 years. The benefits to animals and the environment for us are a bonus. We highly recommend this way of eating!
