Like many people, I am and always have been an animal lover. I remember growing up always surrounded by animals. About a month ago I watched the film EARTHLINGS. I was taken aback by what I saw.
From that day on I decided I could no longer partake in the consumption of animal products. I was able to quit cold turkey and haven't looked back. I decided to become more informed. After doing some reading, becoming a vegan was a win-win situation. As it turned out not only was I saving the lives of precious animals, I was lowering my risk of cancer, becoming healthy and losing weight all at the same time.
Unfortunately since becoming a vegan I have gained 5 pounds in the last month. My weight has always been as issue in my life but I am determined not to go back to my old eating habits. Becoming a vegan is definitely one of the best choices I've ever made.
Editor's Note: Good for you, Liza. EARTHLINGS is a powerful documentary that I've heard tons of people credit for their reason for going vegan. Once you know the facts, it's hard to turn your back on them and plead ignorance. I know the exact feeling of shock you felt when you first learned what really happens to animals.
As for the weight gain, I would love to throw a few suggestions out there for you. Nowadays it's actually really easy to substitute anything you used to eat in a meat-filled diet with vegan options because there are so many amazing meat and cheese substitutes, vegan desserts, ice creams, and other treats. I think these foods have their place and are great for people making the transition to veganism.
Now, I don't know if you're eating these, but as just a general note to anyone who is, they typically are not going to help you lose weight. I have heard about a guy who lost hundreds of pounds by just substituting veggie burgers in place of his old meat burgers, but I think it was an extreme case.
For normal people, you will see amazing health benefits and weight loss if you stick to a diet of real, whole foods, like whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, and nuts/seeds. Dr. Neal Barnard has several amazing books, and one of them is dedicating to help with vegan weight loss: The Get Healthy, Go Vegan Cookbook.
