I recently discovered I had "burning tongue." Look at pictures on google images and you will see how devastating and painful this is. I have been troubled by a swollen burning painful tongue, tingling in hands and memory problems for some time. I had no idea this was a severe and often irreversible degenerative nerve problem caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency.
I am now taking 2000 mcg of B12 methylcobalamin a day hopefully this will reverse the painful symptoms I have. No one told me in all the health promoting information of being vegan that diet alone wouldn't be enough. After 8 continuous years eating vegan I have a serious problem.
Please be sure to advise all those seeking an alternative to the standard diet that vitamin B12 is essential to maintain nerve function. It does not exist in plants and only available in animal products. If you do not have it in your diet you will have serious consequences.
I became vegan because of my compassion for animals and my commitment to the environment, but this really frightened me. Please make people aware of this.
