I already knew about all the arguments for going vegan. The methane emissions. The environmental damage. The inefficiency in terms of food generation. The cruelty. But all that did was change eating meat from a moral obligation (it's cultural) to a guilty pleasure. I had even seen videos, of "imperfect" baby chicks being poured like yellow fuzzballs into a pair of press rolls, that left them dead and flat, like instant roadkill. It hadn't moved me.
Then one day by accident, I saw a video on facebook of a man moving calves from one cage to another. He didn't lead them gently. He *threw them* over the compartment wall, like *things*, and the creatures slipped and stumbled and struggled and scrambled to stand upright again, obviously afraid, confused, and shocked.
So was I.
From that day forward, I had trouble bringing myself to buy meat. I stopped buying veal. Then I stopped buying chicken.
Now I'm trying to figure out how to become and remain vegan, without it costing me much time and money.
The heart has its reasons that reason knows not.
